Customer Reviews
I love the product. It was a great purchase.,
by Swee Hock Lim, 2010-03-09
This is my first GPS navigator. It's very user friendly and works flawlessly. The best part is the price at Amazon.com, can't beat it. It was a great buy and am enjoying the product.
Nice Unit, Easy to Use, Quality a bit suspect,
by Sean Conroy, 2010-03-08
Purchased this unit for my wife, she had a GPS that was several years old and figured this would be a nice upgrade.
Item is great, the lane assist is a very helpful, probably my wifes favorite feature. The route it selects is very logical (the older unit would suggest odd routes).
The only downside, Item was purchased as a christmas gift, here we are 2 months later and the unit stopped working. The display no longer funtions. When I called Garmin, I was told the wait time on the phone was 60 to 90 minutes. I went to get an RMA on the net, that will take 2 to 3 days, then I need to ship it back at my expense so they can repair or replace. (I've read that they usually send back a refurished one)
So the unit is nice, the quality not that best and the customer service and Garmin not all that great.
Garmin Nuvi 755T rocks!!!,
by S Fox, 2010-03-08
I reviewed a number of models online, and researched Consumer Reports for a few months before actually purchasing this unit. The Garmin Nuvi 755T is outstanding, and surpassed my expectations right out of the box! It is incredibly easy to use, no manual needed -- extremely user-friendly machine, even for a novice GPS person. Saving and locating new routes, locations was very intuitive, and required little or no effort. On-screen prompts are helpful. Highly recommend this unit to any first-time GPS user looking for a moderately priced starter machine.
An Excellent Device In the Hands of a Knowledgeable User,
by David M. Garrett, 2010-03-08
I purchased the 755T after considerable research including Amazon users' mixed reviews. I'm finding it an outstanding value. My experience with this device has been excellent. Rather than share its many virtues - covered elsewhere - let me share my observations on three weaknesses observed by other reviewers.
First, the accompanying documentation is limited to a Quick Start Guide. I encourage you to download the 76-page user manual from the Garmin website and read it cover-to-cover. Doing so should alleviate many pitfalls experienced by others. Second, map updates are - as many have noted - a slow (several hours) download. Certainly tedious if you hover over your PC. Two suggestions. Read and follow the directions exactly. (Get impatient, try a shortcut, and you're likely to have problems.) Next, as I did, simply activate the download program before going to bed and the software will be ready to install and run in the morning. Again, read and follow directions and it should go without a hitch. I had no problems. (IMPORTANT - deactivate your energy-saving power settings on your PC (Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver/Power) so your hard drive does not hibernate or shut off during the download.) Finally, several reviews note poor navigation (e.g., taking the long way around). In my experience no GPS device - the 755T or any other - is a substitute for common sense. Case in point - last night my wife and I drove to a restaurant accessible via a one-way access road. Leaving the restaurant, the Nuvi wanted to take us West, down the access road to the next highway cross-over where we could U-turn - a diversion of 2 miles. Unlike me, the Nuvi did not understand a shortcut through the parking lot back to an intersecting road that allowed us to reverse our original route to the restaurant. Once there, however, the 755T quickly recalculated and had us on the original path.
GPS is a tool. You need to know how to use it and how to blend it with your own observation and common sense. Do this and I'd be shocked if you don't find the 775T a very capable, dependable travel aid. Last word: the Garmin friction mount is superb - holds its position on the dash while driving; is transferrable to a second vehicle; and can be removed for storage to help avoid theft. Much preferred to a windshield/suction mount.
Industry standard - with quirks,

The 755 is a recent PND that works well. It is the basic feature set of a post high end model with plenty of memory for additional maps, POI's and custom routes.
Many have noted a problem with the touchscreen and there are times where the registered point is off the touched point by several cm. This problem is not consistent but occurs often enough to be a nuisance, especially when browsing menus when you have to be very careful about heading into the wrong selections.
Map browsing is also inconsistent. The map will zoom and pan in unexpected ways at times. Even at low map settings, the drag can be bumpy and irregular.
The media player works well and the FM transmitter can be usable. I wish the rules for defining artists and albums were better documented.
The live traffic system is only for a very few specific areas and not for anywhere near where I use the PND, it seems. It's use to detect an empty FM slot for the media player was not adequate, either.
The maps may be good for cities, even though the most current one seems nearly a year out of date, but they do not include many NFS roads and navigable trails. When going to a campsite, I can't even get the route to go from point to point. Instead it goes 'offroad' to a point and back, then down the highway perpendicular to the next and out to it and so forth. For example, when hitting the Carson City bypass past the map's known road, it tried to get me back on its roads rather than just extrapolate to the next waypoint (route imported from Google). I have also encountered problems in that routing seems to prefer access roads rather than the freeway in routing.
Strong points include the user and development communities and Garmin's support of them. FOSS maps and POI collections are extensive and easy to obtain and use. Garmin has good software plus there are utilities like gpsbabel and gmaptogpx and others that extend the utility of the device in interesting ways.
